EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Marquette junior Taylor Madigan scored with 2:28 left in regulation to propel the Golden Eagles (16-2-2) past Georgetown 1-0 in the title game of the BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship and give the school its first league title. Madigan, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player, connected on a pass from graduate-student Rachael Sloan, who started the play with a pass from the far sideline of the box.

'First, congratulations to Georgetown on a great game, you can tell how tightly contested it was,' Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. 'Both teams had chances and I don't know if you could have drawn it up any better. For Taylor to come through for us and score a goal was great. It allowed us to lift a trophy today. This is a huge day for the program and Marquette and everyone involved. This really was a culmination of everything that we have been working for as a program.'

Marquette had the run of play for much of the first half, holding a 7-2 advantage in shots. The Hoyas (15-3-3) had the first chance of the game in the opening minutes as a shot from freshman Sarah Adams was blocked, resulting in one of two corner kicks for GU in the opening 45 minutes.

The Golden Eagles also fared well in the second half holding a 5-1 edge in shots.

Overall, Marquette held a 12-3 advantage in shots while Georgetown had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Hoyas had just two shots on goal, while Marquette had eight. Marquette senior Ally Miller, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player, anchored the MU backline.

Marquette freshman goalkeeper Amanda Engel made two saves, while Georgetown redshirt-freshman Emma Newis had seven stops.

The BIG EAST title was Marquette's second since joining the league in 2005. The Golden Eagles also captured the 2008 men's golf championship.

Georgetown awaits word on the at-large selections for the 2012 NCAA Championship, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m., ET, on www.NCAA.com.

The BIG EAST also announced it was assisting an effort with the Red Cross at this weekend's Women's Soccer Championship. At halftime of the contest, administrators from the league and UConn collected donations on behalf of the American Red Cross to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Connecticut Chapter of the Red Cross.
