PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Two second-half goals propelled the West Virginia women's soccer team (15-4-1) in a 2-0 victory over Connecticut (10-9-3) in the first semifinal of the BIG EAST Championship at Yurcak Field. Senior Megan Mischler scored the gamewinner in the 69th minute to lead West Virginia to its second title game appearance in the last four years. The Mountaineers will take on either USF or Marquette on Sunday, Nov. 7 at noon, ET.
Following a scoreless first half, West Virginia broke through as Mischler knocked home her seventh goal of the season. The goal was set up by a feed from junior Blake Miller who slotted a pass into the right side of the box. Mischler was able to outrace the UConn defender and one-time the ball over the hands of the charging UConn junior goalkeeper Jessica Dulski.
The Mountaineers got their second goal of the game in the 73th minute as rookie Francis Silva placed a shot toward the left post from nine yards out which ricocheted in. Miller also picked up an assist on the play, her second of the evening.
West Virginia finished the game with seven shots on goal, while UConn totaled three. The Huskies entered the contest averaging 7.7 shots on goal. Dulski finished the game with five saves while WVU senior Kerri Butler made three stops in the victory.
Connecticut will wait to see if it earns a berth to the NCAA Championship with the Selection Show on Monday, November 8 at 4:30 p.m., ET on ESPNU.
This year's title game of the BIG EAST Championship will be held Nov. 7 at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University. The game will be televised live nationally on the CBS College Sports Network and broadcast live on numerous regional sports networks including SportsNet New York (SNY) and streamed online at www.bigeast.tv for free.
