Women's Soccer Minute - Off `Two' A Good Start

Notre Dame and Marquette both earned wins on Friday night as the NCAA Championship got underway on campus sites. The Irish (14-5-2) beat Milwaukee 3-1 at home, while the Golden Eagles (17-2-2) topped Illinois State 3-0 at home. The league is off to a 2-0-0 start in NCAA play.


'At this point in the year, I am happy for the win,' ND head coach Randy Waldrum said. 'This late, sometimes that's the main thing, get the win any way that you can get it. For eight or nine kids we had on the field, it was their first NCAA (Championship) game tonight, so it's part of the learning process and how to manage come playoff time.

The Fighting Irish move on to the Second Round of the NCAA Championship, where they will face the winner of Saturday's opening round match between Wake Forest and Georgia Southern.


Marquette (17-2-2) received a pair of first half goals from junior Lisa Philbin and senior Ally Miller, while sophomore Mary Luba notched MU's final tally midway through the second half. A complete recap can be found here.


MU advances to the second round for the third consecutive year and will play the winner of the Princeton/West Virginia game, next weekend at a site to be determined.


Rutgers carries the league banner on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. match at Colgate. Georgetown rounds out the BIG EAST postseason quartet with a 5 p.m. match at Virginia Tech on Sunday.
