Louisville Women's Soccer Moves On To NCAA Third Round

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Louisville women's soccer team (14-6-3) continued its historic season with a 2-0 win at No. 5/3 Memphis (21-1-1) in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship Friday night. After earning their first NCAA Championship win following a First Round victory over Dayton on Nov. 12, the Cardinals are the league only BIG EAST team still playing in this year's tournament. In other action on Friday night, No. 12/19 Marquette (18-4-0) lost to No. 13/16 Penn State (20-4-0) by the score of 4-1.

The loss was Memphis' first of the year and snapped a 22-game unbeaten streak. With the win, the Cardinals will take on No. 9/6 Florida State on Sunday, Nov. 20 in Memphis, Tenn.

With the victory, the Cardinals set a school record for wins. Friday's win was also Louisville's first ever victory against an opponent ranked in the top five nationally as Memphis was fifth in the NSCCA coaches' poll.

"I think the year has been magical, but what creates years like this is the players that you have," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We have a very, very special group. We aren't defined by individual players; we're actually defined by our unit. They enjoy being around each other from the first player on the team to the 30th player on the team--at practice, at dinner, wherever. I think it shows that we play for each other."
