An update on the BIG EAST Olympic sports.
Women's Soccer
Four BIG EAST women's soccer teams have advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Championship for the first time in league history. All four teams will be on the road this weekend trying to advance to the quarterfinals, beginning with West Virginia at Boston College on Friday night. On Saturday, Georgetown is at Minnesota, Marquette is at Florida State and Notre Dame is at North Carolina. The league had a record three teams advance to the quarterfinals in 2007.
Men's Soccer
The BIG EAST led all conferences with seven teams selected to the Men's Soccer NCAA Championship. Georgetown, Providence and West Virginia all won first-round home games to advance to the second round. Those three teams will join No. 1 seed Louisville, No. 9 seed Notre Dame and No. 11 seed Connecticut, which each earned first-round byes and will host teams in the second round.
Women's Volleyball
At the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, No. 1 seed Cincinnati will face No. 5 seed Notre Dame on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first of two semifinal matches for the right to play in the title match on Sunday. In the remaining quarterfinals, No. 2 Louisville plays No. 7 Seton Hall and No. 3 Marquette will match up against No. 6 Pittsburgh. The Championship is being held in Pittsburgh.
Cross Country
Six BIG EAST men's cross country teams and four women's teams travel to Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22 for the 2010 NCAA Championships. Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Providence, Syracuse and Villanova all earned bids on the men's side. Cincinnati junior Eric Finan also was selected to the field as an individual competitor. For the women, Georgetown, Providence, Syracuse and Villanova each qualified. West Virginia placed two runners in the field as individual competitors in sophomore Katilyn Gillespie and junior Sarah-Anne Brault.
