Notre Dame Women's Soccer Heads To The College Cup

BIG EAST Notes

The No. 7/10 Irish will take on No. 17/19 Ohio State on Friday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. ET in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship. The game will be televised on ESPN2, ESPNU and streamed live online on ESPN3.com. The winner will play for the national title on Sunday at Noon.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP BERTHS - The BIG EAST Conference has totaled 22 NCAA Championship berths over the past four years to average almost six teams a season. In addition, the league has seen a team (Notre Dame) advance to the College Cup in each of the last five years.

TEN NCAA WINS - The BIG EAST Conference has totaled 10 wins during the 2010 NCAA Championship to tie the league record of 10 set in 2004.
 
 
 
SIX BIG EAST TEAMS IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP - Six BIG EAST women's soccer teams participated in the 2010 NCAA Championship, including first-time entrant USF. In addition, three BIG EAST schools served as host sites for the First and Second Rounds: Notre Dame, Marquette and West Virginia. Connecticut and Georgetown also were picked to round out the BIG EAST contingent.
 
 
 
 
The BIG EAST record for most teams selected is eight set in 2001. Last year seven BIG EAST teams earned an NCAA berth.
 
 
 
 
BIG EAST CONFERENCE - A BIG EAST team has advanced to the College Cup 12 times in the past 16 years (since 1995). In addition, a BIG EAST squad has played for the women's soccer national championship eight times, including four appearances in the last seven seasons. The BIG EAST has claimed a pair of women's soccer national titles (Notre Dame in 1995 and 2004). Overall, the BIG EAST has 29 national championships, the most recent coming by Villanova women's cross country in Nov. 2010.
 
 
 
 
CREATING HISTORY - Four BIG EAST women's soccer teams advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Championship for the first time in league history. All four teams were on the road and posted a 2-2-0 mark. The league had a record three teams advance to the quarterfinals in 2007; UConn, Notre Dame and West Virginia.
 
 
 
 
NOTRE DAME NOTES - The Irish are making their school-record fifth straight appearance in the College Cup and their 12th trip overall. In his 12 years at Notre Dame, head coach Randy Waldrum has led the Fighting Irish to the College Cup eight times. Notre Dame is 57-15-1 (.788) all-time in NCAA Championship play, with the 57 wins being second-most in NCAA tournament history.
 
 
 
 
Junior forward Melissa Henderson continues her two-year run of success in the NCAA Championship, having tallied 24 points (10 goals - 4 assists) in her last nine NCAA postseason matches. Notre Dame is 43-0-2 all-time when Henderson scores a point.
 
 
 
 
The Fighting Irish are 327-0-1 all-time when taking a 2-0 lead in a match, and is unbeaten in its last 304 such contests.
 
 
 
 
SERIES HISTORY - Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Ohio State 5-0-0, with the last meeting held during the first round of the 2002 NCAA Championship. The previous four matchups (1993-96) came during the regular season. The Buckeyes are making their first trip to the College Cup.
