LAS VEGAS – There’s no better place to be on a winning roll than this city in the desert.
DePaul won its second straight run-rule game Friday night with a 9-0 five-inning victory over UNLV in the Sportco Kick-Off Classic.
This was the same UNLV team that had beaten No. 18/18 Louisville 10-1 in five innings just before facing the Blue Demons.
DePaul had an amazing streak of scoring at least one run in nine consecutive innings Friday. The Blue Demons had rolled over UCF 11-0 in five innings earlier in the day.
“This is the place to be on a roll---you better believe it,” said DePaul softball coach Eugene Lenti. “As far as I can remember, this is the first time we’ve started a season scoring in the first nine innings.
“We had a lot of quality at-bats, timely hitting and good pitching. This was really a good day for us.”
DePaul (2-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead Friday night in the first inning when Samantha Dodd singled for her fourth consecutive hit on the day and Kirsten Verdun followed with an RBI double.
In the second inning, freshman catcher Kali Gardner ripped a double to left field in her first collegiate at-bat that scored Megan Coronado, who had singled. With two runners on base, Dodd went 5-for-5 on the day with a two-run double to right field. DePaul added a run in the third on Coronado’s RBI double.
The Blue Demons put it away with four runs in the fourth. Staci Bonezek had an RBI single, Coronado coaxed a bases-loaded walk and Gardner’s sacrifice fly scored Paige Peterson. The fourth run scored on a wild pitch.
“We had contributions up and down the lineup,” Lenti said. “Paige scored twice by getting on base with walks. We didn’t have a letdown after the first game.
“I thought Hannah Penna pitched well in her first start of the season. She only gave up two hits and had six strikeouts and just one walk.”
The Blue Demons have an 11 a.m. showdown on Saturday against BIG EAST rival Louisville.
NOTES: Gardner recorded the first start, first hit, first RBI and first run of her career… the only time DePaul did not score a run on Friday was in the fifth and final inning of its win over UNLV… on the day, the Blue Demons outscored UCF and UNLV by a combined 20-0 and outhit those teams 22-8… on the day, Dodd finished 5-for-7 with five RBIs and three doubles… Verdun was 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs… Coronado went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs… Mary Connolly was 3-for-7 with a home run, a double and a run scored… Allie Braden scored four runs.
