FULLERTON, Calif. – This simply wasn’t DePaul’s night.
Nothing went the Blue Demons’ way during Friday night’s 6-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton, the host school of the Judi Garman Classic.
It left DePaul (13-9) at 1-2 for the tournament with games against Penn State and No. 9/10 Texas coming up on Saturday night.
Cal State Fullerton (12-15) took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a walk, single, error and RBI double by Leesa Harris against Blue Demon ace Kirsten Verdun.
An inning later, Eliza Crawford’s one-out, two-run home run over the fence in right-center made it 5-0 in favor of the Titans.
Next came a third-strike wild pitch, passed ball, walk, and a single to load the bases. Courtney Snyder was hit by a pitch to make it 6-0.
Megan Coronado and Mary Connolly opened the fourth inning with back-to-back singles and Kali Gardner coaxed a one-out walk. But Staci Bonezek popped out to shortstop and pinch-hitter Ali Warren fouled out to first.
Gena Lenti and Allie Braden had back-to-back, one-out singles in the seventh inning, but were left on base.
DePaul returns to the Classic for a 7:30 p.m. game against Penn State on Saturday followed immediately by a 9:30 p.m. showdown with Texas.
NOTES: This was the fourth time the Blue Demons have been shut out this season… the last time they failed to score was on Feb. 17 at the Hilton Houston Plaza Invite when they lost 9-0 to No. 6/6 Texas… Bonezek was 1-for-2, and her double was DePaul’s lone extra-base hit… Gena Lenti was 1-for-2 while Braden, Coronado and Connolly all went 1-for-3… Verdun (9-5) pitched five innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks… Hannah Penna pitched one inning and gave up a base hit with one strikeout.
