SYRACUSE, N.Y. – DePaul’s explosive offense showed no signs of letting up on Saturday.
Behind Mary Connolly’s home run, triple and five RBIs, the Blue Demons rolled to a 15-6, six-inning victory over Syracuse. Winning the opener of this BIG EAST Conference doubleheader gave them eight victories in the last nine games.
Just three days earlier, Hannah Penna had six RBIs in an 18-5, five-inning conference triumph over Seton Hall. That means DePaul (21-13, 8-1 in the BIG EAST) has scored a grand total of 33 runs in its last 10 innings.
After falling behind 1-0 at Syracuse, Paige Peterson put the Blue Demons on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning.
Corinne Ozanne responded with a grand slam shot for Syracuse (13-18, 1-3) in the bottom of the inning.
The Orange’s 5-2 lead didn’t last long. Connolly’s two-run triple and Kirsten Verdun’s RBI single tied it in the third. An inning later, Connolly blasted the three-run homer for an 8-5 lead.
The Blue Demons broke it open with four more runs in the fifth as Verdun slashed a two-run single and Samantha Dodd and Ali Warren each delivered an RBI single.
Capping off the scoring for DePaul in the sixth inning was Staci Bonezek who drove an Orange delivery well beyond the center-field fence with Megan Coronado on base.
Verdun wound up going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Connolly was 2-for-3 with a homer, triple and five RBIs. Dodd went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Bonezek was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Peterson had the two-run home run and Warren an RBI. With the 18 hits against Syracuse, the Blue Demons have a total of 34 hits in their last two games.
Hannah Penna started for DePaul in game two.
