CHICAGO- DePaul was going for its fourth win in a row Saturday against BIG EAST rival Notre Dame at Cacciatore Stadium.
The Blue Demons lost the opener of the double header 6-3 despite an RBI single by Mary Connolly and leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
DePaul (27-17, 13-4) got off to a quick start in the first inning. Pitcher Hannah Penna (8-7) retired Notre Dame's first three batters. Then, with one out in the bottom in the first, Samantha Dodd recorded her first home run of the year. Dodd's homerun put the Blue Demons up 1-0 early.
Laura Winter of Notre Dame led off the second inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence to even the score at 1-1.
Notre Dame (36-10, 16-1) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning on Emilee Koerner's 2-run home run to left.
In the bottom of the third, Kirsten Verdun hit an RBI single scoring Samantha Dodd to make the score 3-2.
Paige Peterson prevented another Notre Dame run in the 5th inning with a fantastic over-the-shoulder catch in right field, running into the fence.
DePaul had Megan Coronado on 3rd with one out, but couldn't bring her home.
Notre Dame scored another three runs in the top of the seventh off a sacrifice fly and a two-run single.
Mary Connolly responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. DePaul failed to score again after loading the bases.
