SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Providence College softball team (23-27-1, 9-13 BIG EAST) fell to the Syracuse Orange (23-28, 10-12 BIG EAST), 9-4, on Sunday, May 5 in Syracuse, N.Y.
After two scoreless innings, the Orange would strike first scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning, including two solo homeruns by Shirley Daniels and Julie Wambold. The Friars would get two runs back to cut the deficit to one (3-2) after junior Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) would knock in sophomore Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) who reached base on a double earlier in the inning. Flego would score the second run of the inning for the Friars on an RBI single from sophomore Megan Rollings (Marysville, Washington).
Daniels would bring the Orange lead back to three (5-2) after her second homerun of the game brought two runs home in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of sixth, sophomore Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif) would lead off the inning with a double to left field and would later score on a single by freshman Kiarra Baldassari (Denville, N.J.), cutting the lead to two, 5-3. The Orange would answer with four runs of their own in their half of the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 9-3.
Dederick would bring in another run on a sacrifice fly, but the Friars could not pull any closer, falling to Syracuse by a 9-4 score.
The Friars will travel down to Tampa, Fla for the BIG EAST Softball Championship, which will begin Thursday, May 9 and conclude Saturday, May 11.
