Louisville and DePaul Earn First Softball Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior second baseman Katie Keller of Louisville was selected BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week and junior Kirsten Verdun of DePaul was named BIG EAST Softball Pitcher of the Week after the first week of action. 


Keller helped the Cardinals open the 2013 season with a 4-1 record. The junior hit .529 (9 for 17) with four home runs and two doubles during the week. She drove in 13 runs and tied a school record with seven RBI in a 16-8 win against Minnesota. Keller was 3-for-4 in that game with two home runs, seven RBI, one double and tied a school record with four runs scored. She tallied a 1.353 slugging percentage in five games.


Verdun went 3-1 at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic and gave up just one earned run in 22.1 innings. The junior recorded complete game shutouts in an 11-0 win against UCF and a 1-0 win against Minnesota and gave up just one run in a 5-1 win against Texas Tech. In four games she recorded 23 strikeouts and held opponents to a .195 batting average.


BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Jenna Simon, Notre Dame, So., 2B

Hit .529 with two RBI and four runs scored in a 2-2 week.

Danielle DeStaso, Seton Hall, So., DH/P

Hit .692 with a 1.385 slugging percentage and .714 on base percentage during a 2-2 week.

Ashley Beza, St. John's, Jr., P/1B

Struck out 10 batters with a 1.70 ERA and hit .364 in four games.

Kourtney Salvarola, USF, Jr., SS

Went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored in an 8-0 win against Marshall. Hit .600 in a 3-1 week.

Lindsey Richardson, USF, Sr., P

Threw a no-hitter against Marshall and allowed just one earned run in 13.1 innings during a 3-1 week.
