DePaul and Notre Dame Split 2011's First BIG EAST Softball Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul freshman Kirsten Verdum was named the first BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the 2011 season, while Notre Dame junior Alexa Maldonado earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.     
Verdun went 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in the circle for the Blue Demons, who posted a 4-1 record last week. She picked up wins over Mississippi, Alabama-Birmingham and USF at the USF Tournament. In a 1-0 win over UAB, the freshman pitched eight innings, giving up six hits and two walks, while striking out seven. For the week, she tossed 23 innings, allowed 14 hits and walked seven batters, while fanning 21. 
Maldonado led the Irish in their 5-0 opening week of play, their best start since 2001. She hit .500, going 7-for-14 from the dish with a double, triple and home run for a slugging percentage of .929. The 2010 All-BIG EAST selection recorded six runs, while driving in six more. She had two multi-hit contests, three multi-RBI contests and scored in four of five games on the week. Maldonado reached by walk three times with one sacrifice play. She also had two stolen bases on the week. Her five flawless putouts extended her streak of games without an error to 106, with her last error coming during the third week of her 2009 freshman campaign.
