BIG EAST teams went 2-0 in nonconference play last night. Rutgers won its sixth straight game against Dartmouth 6-5 and No. 11/11 Louisville defeated Indiana 4-1. USF and Dartmouth were scheduled to play at 7 p.m. but the game was cancelled due to rain.
The Scarlet Knights took an early lead when junior first baseman Alexis Durando hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning. Rutgers never trailed and were led by junior rightfielder Loren Williams and sophomore centerfielder Jackie Bates. Williams and Bates accounted for five of the team's eight hits. Freshman Dresden Maddox recorded the win and is now 4-0 on the season.
Sophomore shortstop Whitney Arion led the Cardinals to a 4-1 win, hitting two home runs and driving in all four runs. Six players hit safely in the game as junior Caralisa Connell recorded her 15th win of the season. She pitched a complete game, allowing just one run (earned) on three hits and struck out nine.
Two BIG EAST home games are on Thursday's slate. Providence will host Yale at 4 p.m. while USF looks to extend its winning streak to 16 when they host Cornell at 7 p.m.
