PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Syracuse and Pittsburgh split this week's BIG EAST softball weekly honors as Syracuse junior Kelly Saco was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while Pittsburgh senior Cory Berliner earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors.
Saco helped the Orange open up conference play with three wins last week, sweeping Rutgers to improve to 24-5 overall. The junior went 6-for-12 at the plate, batting .500 and slugging 1.250 with an on base percentage of .538. Saco recorded three home runs on the week, one in each contest. She scored five runs, driving in six. In the field, Saco had 18 putouts, one assist and no errors.
Berliner earned two wins in a 5-0 week for the Panthers. She started the week with a 5-1 11-inning win over Robert Morris March 22, allowing one run off six hits. The senior opened BIG EAST play March 26, earning her 44th career win, which tied Laura Berlardinelli (2004-07) for the school record in career victories. The win was also the first no-hitter of her career and the eighth-ever in program history. She was close to a perfect game, giving up a walk in the bottom of the first and there was an error committed in the fifth. For the week, Berliner struck out 15 batters, allowed six hits and gave up one run over 16 innings pitched for a 0.44 ERA.
