PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Notre Dame and Syracuse split this week's BIG EAST softball awards as ND senior Heather Johnson was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while SU junior Jenna Caira earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors. This is the third-straight award for Johnson and the second accolade for Caira this season. Johnson is the first BIG EAST Player of the Week recipient to receive the award in three consecutive weeks since the award began in 1992.
Johnson led the Irish to a 5-1 mark last week, including a 2-1 record in conference play with a home run in each game against Louisville. The third baseman was 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate with three home runs and nine RBI for a 1.059 slugging percentage, striking out just once in six games. She leads the league in slugging with a 1.400 percentage in BIG EAST play and boasts a conference high six home runs. For the week, Johnson had three multi-RBI outings and currently rides a 21-game hitting streak. She posted six runs, three walks, one sacrifice fly, four putouts and 11 assists.
Caira went 5-0 in the circle for the Orange last week, including two shutouts against Villanova. The righty tossed 26.0 innings, while fanning 33 batters. She leads the league in strikeouts looking with 27 and is second in total strikeouts with 73. Caira gave up six runs and allowed 14 hits for a 1.62 ERA in five conference contests last week with four starts. In a 2-0 win over Villanova April 16, the junior gave up two hits and sat down nine batters for a complete-game effort. She allowed just one hit in her second shutout of the week April 17, a 6-0 decision against the Wildcats, with six strikeouts over five innings of work.
