PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville sophomore designated player/catcher Taner Fowler was selected as the BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week and Notre Dame sophomore Laura Winter was named BIG EAST Softball Pitcher of the Week after the 11th week of action.
Fowler led the Cardinals to five wins over league opponents, including two victories over No. 17/17 USF. The sophomore registered eight hits, four home runs and a double while also knocking in eight RBI and scoring six runs. She batted .471 with a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.235 slugging clip. She hit two long balls in Game 1 of the series at Seton Hall and added another in the nightcap. Fowler leads the team with nine home runs and moved into 10th on the school's all-time list with 13.
Winter pitched a no-hitter against DePaul and earned a 4-0 record last week. She blanked the Blue Demons in the first game of the series, on her way to the Irish's first series sweep of DePaul since 2006. The sophomore pitched 19.1 scoreless innings from the circle in four appearances and held DePaul to only one earned run in 20.2 innings. Winter's winning performances also helped move Notre Dame up to fourth place in the conference standings.
