Softball Minute - Syracuse Sweeps Rutgers to Move Ahead in Standings

Syracuse moved ahead of Rutgers in the standings last night, sweeping the Scarlet Knights 6-0 and 11-3. The Orange have six conference games remaining on their schedule and currently hold the seventh spot in the league. Rutgers also has six BIG EAST games left on its schedule but trail the Orange by one game. Only four spots remain open for the BIG EAST Championship.

DePaul has already clinched a spot in the tournament but improved its record with a sweep of St. John's. The Blue Demons took the first game of the double dip 11-0 in five innings and claimed a 4-0 win in the nightcap.

In nonconference action, No. 7/8 Louisville fell to No. 19/19 Kentucky 2-1 in a rematch of the instate rivalry. The Cardinals claimed a 5-1 win April 3 but Wednesday night's loss snapped Louisville's season-high 15 game win streak. In other nonconference play, Providence defeated Fairfield 8-5.

Louisville, No. 24/24 USF, DePaul and Notre Dame have all clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth. As of April 22 they rank No. 11, 41, 43 and 49 respectively in the NCAA Softball RPI.

All five BIG EAST teams in action Thursday are playing nonconference competition. Villanova heads to Lafayette for a doubleheader, Rutgers hosts Monmouth, Connecticut hosts Albany and DePaul gets a visit from Loyola (Chicago).
