PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Laura Winter of Notre Dame was selected BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week and junior Kirsten Verdun of DePaul was named BIG EAST Softball Pitcher of the Week in the 12th weekly awards of the 2013 season.
Winter, last week's Pitcher of the Week honoree, hit .467 (7-for-15) during a 4-1 week for the Fighting Irish. The junior drove in eight runs, connected on two home runs and scored twice. She recorded an .867 slugging percentage and a .526 on-base percentage. In Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, Winter went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one home run in a 6-3 win against DePaul. She was walked three times in the nightcap and went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in a 5-2 victory. The junior also went 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA in the circle and tossed 23 strikeouts in 20.1 innings pitched.
Verdun went 4-1 with a 1.13 ERA and pitched four complete games last week. She opened the week with three consecutive shutouts and threw 19 scoreless innings. The junior struck out 34 batters in 31.0 innings and held opposing hitters to a .186 batting average. Verdun earned the award for the second time this season.

Went 8-for-13 (.615) with two doubles, one home run, four RBI and six runs scored.
Maria DeLuca, Seton Hall, Jr., 2B
Posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and hit .417 (5-for-12) with one double, two home runs and five RBI.
Tori Free, St. John's, Fr., P
Went 2-1 with a 0.61 ERA in three complete games. Struck out 27 batters in 23.0 innings and threw one complete-game shutout.
