Notre Dame and Syracuse Once Again Split BIG EAST Softball Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the second-straight week, Notre Dame and Syracuse shared the BIG EAST softball weekly honors. Irish senior Alexia Clay was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while Orange junior Jenna Caira picked up her second consecutive BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honor. This is the fourth award for Caira this year and the fifth weekly accolade for the Orange. Clay's honor marks her first and the seventh for the Irish squad this season.
Clay blasted a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning at Connecticut May 8 to cap off a five-run final frame for the No. 21/24 Irish, securing the program's second-straight BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and 13th overall. On the week, Notre Dame went 6-0, including five wins against BIG EAST teams. Clay went 8-for-16 at the dish, batting .500 and slugging .938 with a double and two home runs. The catcher also tallied nine runs and drove in eight RBI.
Caira helped the Orange to a 5-0 week, picking up three wins and one save. The righty recorded a 1.75 ERA with 32 strikeouts over 24.0 innings of work. She allowed six earned runs in four starts and five appearances. The three wins extended her lock on the school's single-season win record, improving to 30-9 for the year. She also leads SU with a career-best 65 wins. Caira leads the league in wins (30), ERA (1.47), strikeouts (292) and strikeouts looking (87).
