DePaul Defeats Georgetown 1-0 in Game 1 of Softball Championship

TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 4 seed DePaul (32-20) defeated No. 5 seed Georgetown (21-33) 1-0 in quarterfinal action at the 2013 BIG EAST Championship Thursday at the USF Softball Stadium on the campus of USF. DePaul junior Kirsten Verdun pitched a gem in the circle with a complete game, two-hit shutout. The Blue Demons advance to play the winner of No. 1 Notre Dame (41-12) and No. 8 Seton Hall (21-29) Friday at 4 p.m. ET.


DePaul took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when senior outfielder Samantha Dodd drove in junior shortstop Allie Braden with an RBI double. Dodd was 3-for-3 from the plate to lead all hitters. Braden and sophomore Mary Connolly both went 2-for-3 and sophomore outfielder Paige Peterson added another hit to give the Blue Demons their total of eight.


Dodd, Connolly and Verdun are All-BIG EAST First Team selections. DePaul will play Notre Dame on Friday in the quarterfinals. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm and the game can be watched exclusively at
