DePaul Defeats Rutgers in BIG EAST Softball Championship Quarterfinal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In the second quarterfinal game of the 2011 BIG EAST Softball Championship, No. 2 seed DePaul defeated No. 7 seed Rutgers 5-2 at Ulmer Stadium on the University of Louisville campus. DePaul jumped ahead early, putting up three runs in the first inning via senior Alex Morocco, senior Sean Plese, and freshman Kirsten Verdun. The Scarlet Knights answered back in the top of the second inning as sophomore Ashley Bragg scored thanks to an RBI from sophomore Jennifer Harabedian. RU plated another run in top of the third, when junior Brittney Lindley scored off of a single up the middle from sophomore Kaci Madden, pulling the score within one at 3-2. The Blue Demons tallied two more runs, scoring in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, a triple from sophomore Samantha Dodd plated Verdun, for her second run of the day. Dodd scored in the sixth inning off of a left field single from junior Lynsey Ciezki, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI. Dodd went 1-for-3, scoring once and batting in two runs. Lindley led the Scarlet Knights at the dish, going 2-for-3 on the day with one run scored, while senior Mandy Craig went 2-for-4. Overall, Rutgers posted seven hits, while DePaul put up six. In the circle, senior Lindsey Dean picked up the win in a complete game effort for the Blue Demons as she improved to 10-5 on the year, while sophomore Abbey Houston took the loss for Rutgers. Houston allowed two hits and three runs over 0.2 innings pitched. Freshman Megan Williams relieved Houston, tossing 5.1 innings, giving up two runs and one earned run, while scattering four hits. The Blue Demons advanced to the semifinals, where they take on the No. 3 seed Syracuse tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Earlier today, the Orange beat No. 6 seed Pittsburgh 2-1. The last time the two teams met was in the semifinals of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship, where Syracuse beat the Blue Demons 3-2. The 2011 Softball Championship is an eight-team, single-elimination tournament. This year's championship will be held at Ulmer Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville. The Championship runs from May 12-14.
