Louisville Outlasts USF in BIG EAST Softball Championship Quarterfinal

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In the fourth quarterfinal game of the 2011 BIG EAST Softball Championship today, No. 5 seed Louisville (35-17, 12-7 BIG EAST) edged No. 4 seed USF (33-21, 13-5 BIG EAST) 2-0 at Ulmer Stadium on the University of Louisville campus. Louisville advances to play in the semifinals tomorrow at 5 p.m. and will face No. 1 seed Notre Dame. The Irish are riding a 14-game winning-streak with their last loss and lone conference loss coming at the hands of Louisville May 17 in a 9-6 decision. Today's contest proved to be a pitching duel early as the game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. UofL junior Tesha Paysen scored off of a sacrifice fly of the bat of freshman Katie Keller. The bats stayed warm for the Cardinals as senior Colby Wherry sent a solo shot just over the left field fence. In the circle, UofL junior starter Tori Collins picked up the win, improving to 15-9 on the season, while USF freshman Sara Nevins took the loss to drop to 15-8. Both pitchers tossed complete game efforts, striking out six batters each. Collins allowed two hits, while walking three Bulls. Nevins gave up four hits and one earned run. The 2011 Softball Championship is an eight-team, single-elimination tournament. This year's championship is being held at Ulmer Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville. The Championship runs from May 12-14.
