PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Five BIG EAST softball teams recorded wins on the first day of NCAA regional action. No. 15 Louisville, along with Notre Dame, Syracuse, USF and DePaul all won and will play in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournaments on Saturday.
Louisville junior Alicja Wolny blasted a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cardinals a 6-4 victory over Valparaiso in the Louisville regional. UofL used its second-consecutive walk-off home run to earn a spot in the winner's bracket of Saturday's regional action. The No. 7/9 Cards will face No. 19/21 Michigan at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Notre Dame freshman Emilee Koerner drove in the go-ahead run before classmate Katey Haus added a trio of insurance runs with a three-run homer to cap off a four-score ninth innings as Notre Dame posted a 7-3 win over Hawai'i in the Tucson Regional. The Irish will face No. 13 seed Arizona at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday on ESPNU.
Syracuse senior Lisaira Daniels was 3-for-4 with three RBI and an inside-the-park home run to lead the No. 25 Orange past Long Beach State 4-2, in the opening game of the Tempe Regional. SU will play No. 3 seed Arizona State at 4 p.m. ET in the winner's bracket.
USF beat Central Florida 1-0 in the Gainesville regional behind strong defense from senior Jessica Mouse and four-hit pitching from sophomore Sara Nevins. The Bulls will move onto the winner's bracket where they will face Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.
The Blue Demons knocked off Massachusetts 3-0 in the Columbia Regional behind the two-hit pitching of sophomore Kirsten Verdun and a late rally sparked by senior Lynsey Ciezki and freshman Brittany Boesel. DePaul will play No. 9 seed Missouri at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
