LEXINGTON, Ky. – Seven BIG EAST volleyball teams were recently recognized for excellence in the classroom when they were honored with 2013-14 Team Academic Awards from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Defending BIG EAST Tournament champion Marquette is one of the seven representatives, while another (Butler) qualified for last year’s conference tournament. The other five are DePaul, Georgetown, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova.

The 2014 volleyball season begins Friday, Aug. 29 with nine of the BIG EAST’s 10 schools opening. Marquette will open its season Saturday, Aug. 30.
