Today in the BIG EAST - Friday, Aug. 27

Fourteen of the 15 volleyball squads take to the court this weekend as the 2010 season begins. The 14 teams will take part in 14 different tournaments all across the country. Rutgers makes the furthest trip, heading to Long Beach, Calif. for the Baden Classic where they battle Long Beach State on Friday afternoon.
 
St. John's is the first BIG EAST team in action, as the Red Storm face Iona at 10 a.m. Friday morning to kickoff the Army Tournament.
 
Five volleyball squads will battle ranked opponents during the opening weekend. Villanova highlights the slate with a match against No. 1 Penn State on Saturday. Other matchups include Pittsburgh vs. No. 21 Dayton, USF vs. No. 15 Florida State, Marquette vs. No. 6 Minnesota and Notre Dame hosting No. 18 Arizona.
 
All seven field hockey teams open the season this weekend with No. 8 Syracuse starting things off, hosting Northwestern Friday at 2 p.m. The BIG EAST opens the season facing some ranked opponents as Rutgers travels to No. 12 James Madison tonight, while No. 13 Louisville squares off against No. 10 Duke in a tournament hosted by Michigan State Saturday. The winner of the ranked match-up will play the victor of the Michigan vs. No. 7 Michigan State contest, giving the Cardinals the potential opportunity to play two ranked teams this weekend. No. 5 Connecticut, who is favored to win the conference title, will take on Maine Sunday as the Huskies begin the season at home.    
 
There are 15 women's soccer teams in action on Friday, everyone except nationally ranked Notre Dame is in action. Highlighting the Friday docket are home-openers for DePaul, Georgetown, Providence and Syracuse. The No. RV/22 Golden Eagles host Auburn at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Tigers are just outside the top 25 receiving votes in the national polls.
 
On Sunday at Noon, UConn takes on nationally ranked Virginia in University Park, Pa. The Hokies are ranked No. 17/NR in the national polls. West Virginia squares off against Ohio State in another key nonconference matchup at 1 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes are on the cusp of the top 25 polls as well.
