BIG EAST Men's Soccer Opens the Season with Big Wins
BIG EAST men's soccer teams have already picked up four wins over ranked opponents in 2011. West Virginia defeated then-No. 22/11 Virginia 1-0 on August 26, while top-ranked Louisville cruised past then-No. 6/2 UCLA 2-0 on Aug. 27 and USF posted a 2-0 shutout over then-RV/13 Wake Forest. In addition, Notre Dame (then ranked No. 12/9) battled to a double-overtime 0-0 draw against then-No. 17/18 Indiana. On Sept. 1, the BIG EAST picked up another win over a ranked opponent as St. John's defeated No. 8/19 William & Mary with a convincing 3-0 victory. The BIG EAST will look to continue its success, with four games against ranked opponents coming up this weekend.
No. 1 Georgetown Leads Five BIG EAST Teams in Women's Cross Country Poll
Five BIG EAST teams are ranked in the top-25 of the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Women's Cross Country Rankings. Georgetown received 10 first-place votes to be ranked No. 1. Providence ranks third with one first-place vote and Villanova rounds out three BIG EAST teams in the top five. Syracuse is No. 15 and West Virginia is No. 24. Georgetown is ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic Region and Providence leads the Northeast Region.
On the men's side, there are six BIG EAST teams ranked in the top-25 preseason national poll, with No. 14 Syracuse leading the way. Villanova is ranked No. 17, with Providence right behind the Wildcats at No. 18. Louisville was named in the 20th spot, while Georgetown (22) and Notre Dame (23) are close behind.
Women's Volleyball In High Gear
Four BIG EAST women's volleyball teams that started the season undefeated, with Pittsburgh leading the way with a 4-0 record. The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Invitational this weekend. Notre Dame, St. John's and Syracuse are 3-0. Cincinnati currently holds the longest current home winning streak in Division I women's volleyball at 39. The last Bearcats' loss at home came on Oct. 7, 2007 against St. John's.
Women's Soccer Making Its Mark, Including Notre Dame as No. 1
In the first week's national rankings on August 22, the BIG EAST has four teams in the NSCAA/Continental Tire rankings, led by No. 1 Notre Dame (No. 12 Marquette, No. 17 West Virginia, No. 20 Georgetown) as well as the Soccer America rankings' top-25 (No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 13 Marquette, No. 14 Georgetown, No. 25 West Virginia). Seven of the 10 schools listed in the NSCAA Northeast Regional Rankings are BIG EAST squads: Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown, West Virginia, Louisville, Villanova and Rutgers. Marquette has started the season off strong with a 4-0-0 record, while Providence (1-0-3), Villanova (3-0-1), and Seton Hall (2-0-1) have yet to drop a game.
Field Hockey Competitive on National Stage
This weekend brings four Kookaburra/NFHCA Preseason Poll Top-20 matchups in field hockey. No. 5 Syracuse will play at No. 2 North Carolina on Friday. On Saturday, the Orange will play No. 11 Wake Forest. On Sunday, No. 4 Connecticut will play at No. 8 Penn State and No. 16 Louisville is at Wake Forest. The Huskies are led by BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Jestine Angelini while the Orange are led by BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Liz McInerney. Louisville is led by Weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll selections Caitlin Collins and Haley Jurich.
