BIG EAST Volleyball Weekly Awards Announced

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Lola Arslanbekova of Louisville led the Cardinals to a 4-0 week, including a 3-1 win over No. 10 Kentucky to be named the BIG EAST Volleyball Player of the Week. St. John's Karin Palgutova was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her stellar play in four wins as the Red Storm improved to 7-1 on the season.


Arslanbekova helped Louisville defeat in-state rival, No. 10 Kentucky in four sets with 20 kills and 17 digs. She was also named the MVP of the Cardinal Classic, helping her team with wins over Marshall (3-0), Duke (3-0) and Samford (3-1). The BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year registered a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs over Duke, followed by another double-double effort over Samford with 22 kills, 17 digs and a .429 hitting percentage. She averaged 4.86 kills and 3.65 digs per set in four matches.

Palgutova was named to the Central Connecticut State Invitational All-Tournament Team as she helped St. John's win the tournament and post a 4-0 record for the week. The freshman hit .696 with 17 kills in a 3-1 win over CCSU and had at least seven digs in three matches. She averaged 3.62 kills, 0.54 assists, 2.23 digs and 0.38 blocks per set and registered double-digit kills in three of the four matches.

Hit .700 with 21 kills in a 3-1 win over Buffalo as the Irish went 3-0 to win the Shamrock Invitational. Named MVP of the tournament.

Helped the Golden Eagles win the Xavier Invitational Championship. Named MVP and recorded a double-double in the title match with 37 assists and 12 digs.
Aleksandra Wachowicz, St. John's, So., OH
Averaged 4.38 kills per set in a 4-0 week. Named MVP of the Central Connecticut State Invitational.
Dani White, Georgetown, So., MB
Tallied 46 kills while hitting .446 to earn MVP honors at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational.
Stephanie Zielinksi, Rutgers, Sr., S
Helped Rutgers go 4-0 and claim the Rutgers Invitational Championship. Dished out 40 or more assists in three of the four matches, including a career-high 65 against URI.
