Louisville's Arslanbekova Captures Second BIG EAST Volleyball Weekly Award

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Lola Arslanbekova of Louisville earns BIG EAST Volleyball Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after leading the Cardinals to two wins over nationally ranked teams. Silvi Uattara from Syracuse was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while averaging 3.48 kills per set, including a 25-kill performance in a win over No. 18 Iowa State.

 

Arslanbekova helped the Cardinals sweep No. 11 Purdue in three sets followed by a 3-2 win over No. 20 Illinois. The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year averaged 5.25 kills and 4.0 digs per set including two double-doubles as Louisville improved to 8-1. In the win over Purdue, Arslanbekova tallied 20 kills and 11 digs and followed that up with a 22-kill, 21-dig performance over Illinois en route to MVP honors in a four-team tournament that included Cincinnati.

 

Uattara shined for the Orange last week, recording 17 or more kills in three straight matches. In a win over Iowa, the freshman notched a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. She concluded the week with a career-high 25 kills including eight digs as Syracuse defeated No. 18 nationally ranked Iowa State in five sets. For the week, Uattara averagd 3.48 kills and 0.52 digs per set with a .338 hitting percentage and was named to the Iowa State All-Tournament Team.

 

Weekly Honor Roll:

Alex Johnson, Georgetown, So., OH

Registered three double-doubles in three matches with 4.08 kills and 4.92 digs per set. Earned all-tournament team honors at the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational.

Toni Alugbue, Notre Dame, So., RS

Averaged 4.09 kills per set in three matches, including two against top-25 nationally ranked teams. Named to USC Classic All-Tournament team.

Lindsey Zitzke, Pittsburgh, So., S

Dished out 46 or more assists and 10 or more digs in all three matches last week. Named Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic Tournament MVP with 12.08 assists and 3.17 digs per set.

Sarah Schmid, Rutgers, Fr., MB

Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team selection, led squad to 4-0 week while hitting .536 and averaging 3.38 kills per set.

Stacey Manthorpe, Seton Hall, So., OH/OPP

Named MVP of the URI Carmichael Invitational. Averaged 4.00 kills per set and registered two double-doubles in four straight wins.
