Rutgers Sweeps Fourth BIG EAST Volleyball Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Stephanie Zielinski of Rutgers led the Scarlet Knights to a 4-0 week to be named BIG EAST Volleyball Player of the Week. Teammate Sarah Schmid was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week as the Scarlet Knights became the first team in 2012 to sweep the volleyball weekly awards.

 

Zielinski recorded a double-double in all four matches last week as Rutgers went 4-0 and improved to 14-1 overall. The senior setter dished out 50 or more assists in three of the team's four matches. She recorded 55 assists and 21 digs in a win over George Mason followed by a 57-assist, 28-dig performance in just four sets to defeat Penn on Sept. 15. Zielinski averaged 12.00 assists and 4.47 digs per set.

 

Schmid was named the Penn Invitational Tournament MVP for her stellar performance last week. The freshman hit .324 while registering 3.76 kills per set. She had at least 14 kills in all four matches including a career-high 20 in the win over Penn. Schmid also tallied 16 blocks throughout the week.

 

Weekly Honor Roll:

Vesela Zapryanova, DePaul, Jr., OH

Named to the Loyola Rambler Challenge All-Tournament Team. Averaged 3.70 kills and 2.10 digs per set.

Tanya Lukyanenko, Louisville, Sr., OH

Hit .481 with just one error on 52 attacks. Helped the Cardinals win the Louisville Invitational with a 3-0 week.

Danielle Carlson, Marquette, Sr., RS/MH

Earned all-tournament honors at the Marquette Invitational. Recorded 2.42 kills and 1.50 blocks per set.

Toni Alugbue, Notre Dame, So., RS

Recorded three straight double-doubles to earn all-tournament laurels at the Golden Dome Invitational. Averaged 3.69 kills and 2.92 digs per set.

Stacey Manthorpe, Seton Hall, So., OH/OPP

Was named MVP of the Seton Hall Invitational. Helped the Pirates to a 3-0 week with 2.90 kills and 3.0 digs per set.

Karin Palgutova, St. John's, Fr., OH

Registered 3.27 kills per set and was named to the Blackbird Invitational All-Tournament Team.
