Volleyball Minute - St. John's and USF Grab a Pair of Wins

Tuesday Night in the BIG EAST

Last night, the BIG EAST went 2-2 in nonconference volleyball action. Pittsburgh and Georgetown lost to Duquesne (0-3) and Liberty (1-3) respectively while St. John's defeated Iona (3-0) and USF beat Florida Golf Coast (3-1).


Freshman Karin Palgutova led the Red Storm with 14 kills and eight digs. Senior Sabina Piegza controlled the offense by dishing out 31 assists as St. John's improved to 13-3. In the Bulls' win, freshman Erin Fairs recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Classmate Ciara Brown joined her in double-digit kills with 10 as USF won its sixth straight match to claim an 8-5 record.


The BIG EAST in the Polls

In the latest AVCA Division I Top-25 Poll, Louisville jumped up two more spots and now ranks No. 10 in the nation. The ranking is the highest by a BIG EAST member since 2005, when both Louisville and Notre Dame were ranked within the top-10 for most of the season.


The Week Ahead

Tonight, UConn will face in-state foe Sacred Heart while Syracuse will host its first home match against Binghamton. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.


Following tonight's action, the BIG EAST will begin conference play on Friday. No. 10 Louisville is set to host DePaul, St. John's will host Georgetown and Villanova will travel to Storrs, Conn., to face UConn. All matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. The conference will conclude the weekend with four BIG EAST games on Saturday followed by six on Sunday.
