Tuesday Night in the BIG EAST

Marquette and Villanova grabbed two more nonconference wins for the BIG EAST last night by defeating Western Michigan and Lehigh, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. As a whole, the BIG EAST is 120-72 against the rest of the NCAA and improved to 6-0 against the Patriot League with the win over Lehigh.


Three players recorded double-digit kills for Marquette (15-3, 5-0 BIG EAST). Senior Danielle Carlson registered a match-high 14 while classmates Kelsey Mattai and Holly Mertens each contributed 10. The trio hit a combined .596 and were set-up by junior Elizabeth Koberstein's match-high 42 assists. Marquette is riding an eight-game winning streak.


Villanova (9-10, 3-2 BIG EAST) has a winning streak of its own and won its fourth straight behind the play of senior Krista Anderson and freshmen Lauren Carpenter and Emma Pettit. Anderson became the 14th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career kill mark; she totaled 10 kills in the match. Carpenter matched a season-high with 16 kills while Pettit dished out a match-high 40 assists and notched 10 digs to record the double-double.


What to Watch

Only one team remains undefeated and three have just one loss in BIG EAST play; Marquette (5-0), Louisville (5-1), Notre Dame (5-1) and St. John's (4-1). Two of those four teams will face each other on Friday when No. 15 Louisville (16-3, 5-1 BIG EAST) heads to Queens, N.Y. to play St. John's (17-4, 4-1 BIG EAST). The Cardinals and Red Storm each have one loss in league play, both against Notre Dame (12-6, 5-1 BIG EAST).
