Scott Leads Cincinnati to 3-2 Win Over Connecticut

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Cincinnati (12-18), the fifth seed in the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship, defeated the No. 4 seed Connecticut (19-12) in the first round, 3-2. The Bearcats won 25-21, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-8 and will face the winner of No. 1 Louisville versus No. 8 St. John's on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.


Senior Jordanne Scott, a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection, put together one of the greatest offensive performances in BIG EAST Championship history. She recorded 30 kills, which is tied for second all-time in a BIG EAST Championship match. Dana Fiume of Syracuse recorded 30 in 1999.


With the win, Cincinnati improves to 9-6 all-time in BIG EAST Championship matches while Connecticut dropped to 11-39 in tournament games.


The Bearcats also claimed a 3-2 win in the only regular season meeting between the two teams on Oct. 12 and won 3-1 over the Huskies in the first round of the 2009 BIG EAST Championship.


Scott had 30 kills with a .333 hitting percentage and notched 10 digs to complete the double-double. Joining her in double-digit kills was senior Megan Turner with 13. Junior Emily MacIntyre tallied 19 digs and senior Rachel Rohlfs dished out 36 assists.


Connecticut was led by senior Mattison Quayle's team-high 19 kills and freshman Immanuella Anagu's 10. Senior Angela Roidt recorded a match-high 45 assists and senior Kelsey Maving tallied 19 digs.


Cincinnati claimed the first set by the score of 25-21 behind the stellar play of Scott. The senior registered eight kills with a .467 hitting percentage and Rohlfs recorded 11 assists for the Bearcats.


Connecticut took command of the second set and retaliated to tie the match at 1-1. They won by the score of 25-17 as Roidt controlled the offense, dishing out 11 assists in the set. Freshmen Madeline Kuppe and Anagu recorded four and three kills respectively and All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Quayle added three kills of her own.


The Bearcats rallied a late comeback in the third set. They took a 19-18 lead and never looked back, pulling away to claim a 2-1 lead by the score of 25-20.  Scott put together another tremendous set, tallying six kills on 13 attempts without recording an error.


The fourth set went back and forth throughout. Trailing late and facing elimination, the Huskies tied the match at 21-21 and would ride that momentum to a 25-23 win to force a decisive fifth set. Quayle tallied five more kills while Roidt added another 11 assists. Defensively, Maving tallied five digs.


Connecticut opened the final set strong and jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. However, Cincinnati had an answer and rallied to take a 6-5 advantage. They eventually pulled away and took the final set, 15-8.
