Both New and Familiar Names Earn BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honors

NEW YORK  –  Creighton and Georgetown remain undefeated in league play at 5-0 halfway through the season. Both the Bluejays and Hoyas are represented in Monday’s weekly honors as freshman Joel Rydstrand from Creighton earns Defensive Player of the Week honors and Arun Basuljevic and JT Marcinkowski from Georgetown are named Offensive and Freshman of the Week respectively. Also unbeaten in a two-game week for men’s soccer was Xavier. The Musketeers allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of BIG EAST play this week and for his efforts, Dallas Jaye earns Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
 
Jaye and Marcinkowski are no stranger to BIG EAST Weekly Honors. Jaye was Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 21 and Marcinkowski was Freshman of the week twice previously and Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 14. Both Basuljevic and Rydstrand earn weekly honors for the first time.
 
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arun Basuljevic, Georgetown, So., M, Mahopac, N.Y.  –  Basuljevic earns his first BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season as he tied for league-leader in points and goals this week while leading Georgetown to another undefeated slate. Basuljevic scored both game-winners for No. 10 Georgetown. His goal in the 75th minute broke the scoreless tie on the road against DePaul solidifying the Hoyas’ 1-0 victory. On Wednesday, Basuljevic scored the eventual game-winner in a 3-0 victory over Marquette, sinking the ball past Marquette’s Luis Barraza for a goal in the 47th minute. The game was scoreless in the first half.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Joel Rydstrand, Creighton, Fr., M, Almunge, Sweden  – Rydstrand was part of a defensive unit that allowed just one goal and limited opponents to just 13 shots, four on goal in another 2-0 week for undefeated and top-ranked Creighton. Against Butler, came in to start the second half and played as part of a unit that limited the Bulldogs to just one shot on goal in that period. Earned the start against Marquette and limited the Golden Eagles to just three shots on goal. He added to the win on the offensive side as well by scoring the eventual game-winner in the 32minute unassisted with a shot from the top of the 18.
 
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Dallas Jaye, Xavier, Grad Student, GK, San Ramon, Calif.  – In a 1-0-1 week for the Musketeers Jaye was second in the league in goals against average allowing just one goal in 200 minutes of action. On Wednesday, played 110 minutes and allowed no goals while saving three shots in a scoreless tie at St. John’s. On Saturday, Jaye earned the win in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Villanova saved two shots, including a potential header in the 53rd minute to stop Villanova from going up 2-0. His only goal allowed was off a restart at Villanova
 
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JT Marcinkowski, Georgetown, Fr., GK, Alamo, Calif. –  Added shutouts No. 5 and 6 to his rookie season as Marcinkowski earned his third Freshman of the Week honor and fourth weekly honor. Marcinkowski had four total saves for the week as he helped extend the Hoyas’ win streak to seven games. The freshman had two saves in the 1-0 win at DePaul, one in each period. Against Marquette on Wednesday, saved both shots also one in each half.  
 
BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll
Bennett Kim, Butler, So., M, Carmel, Ind. – Scored the game-winner in Saturday’s 2-1 win over St. John’s. The goal broke the 1-1 tie and moved Butler to 3-2 in league play and ended the Bulldogs’ three-game skid.
 
Timo Pitter, Creighton, Sr., M/F, Oberschwarzach, Germany – Had three points for Creighton in another 2-0 week for the top-ranked Bluejays. Scored the game-winning goal in the 69th minute at Butler and assisted the first goal in a 3-0 victory at Marquette.  
 
Mac Steeves, Providence, Jr., F, Needham, Mass. – Tied for league-high points and goals with two goals against Seton Hall, including the eventual game-winner in a 4-0 victory over the Pirates.
 
Sean Sheridan, Villanova, Sr., M, Levittown, Pa. – Scored the game-winning goal, a PK in the 88th minute in a 2-1 win over Providence. Also added an assist in the Wildcats’ go-ahead goal in a 2-1 loss to Xavier.
 
Majed Osman, Xavier, Jr., M, London, England – Assisted the game-tying goal with 4:20 to play, then scored the game-winner with just over two minutes to go at Villanova, helping Xavier pick up a come-from-behind win on the road. Tied his season-best with three points.
