NEW YORK – Creighton defeated Butler in a five set match on BEDN on Friday night, while Providence earned a win over Xavier in four sets. The Bluejays are 6-1 in league play and Butler evens its BIG EAST record at 4-4. Providence moves into fourth place with a 4-3 record. Xavier’s record is 2-6.
Butler won the first two sets in Omaha before the Bluejays rallied for a come-back win.
Volleyball play continues Saturday with Marquette at Villanova and DePaul at Georgetown at 2 p.m., then St. John’s visiting travel partner Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
No. 17 CREIGHTON 3, BUTLER 2 (19-25,24-26,25-21,25-23,15-9)
Creighton junior Jaali Winters tied her career-high with 28 kills, tied for third-most in Creighton history, in the win. Eighteen of her kills came after the intermission, including eight in the fourth set and four more in the fifth frame. She also served up an ace on match point. Winters added 19 digs and two blocks in the contest. In addition to Winters, Taryn Kloth (18), Marysa Wilkinson (15), Lydia Dimke (7) and Naomi Hickman (7) each added season-bests in kills. Brittany Witt scooped a season-high 30 digs and Dimke dished a career-best 65 assists to go with 13 digs. Creighton (13-5, 6-1 BIG EAST) had 84 kills, 79 assists and 106 digs -- all D.J. Sokol Arena records for a team -- in addition to adding nine blocks and three aces on .282 hitting. Butler (14-6, 4-4 BIG EAST) finished with 71 kills, two aces, 87 digs and 13.0 blocks on .275 hitting. Five Bulldogs had double-figure kills, paced by 16 each from Whitney Beck and Brooke Gregory. Setter Makayla Ferguson had 49 assists and 21 digs, and Bri Lilly added eight block assists.

PROVIDENCE 3, XAVIER 1 (25-23,18-25,25-22,25-21)
The Friars defeated the Musketeers in four sets to improve to 15-7 and 4-3 on the year. With the loss, Xavier falls to 7-15 (2-6) on the season. Providence had two players with double-digit kills. Addison Root led the team with 18 while Jenae Alderson recorded 11. Allison Barber had 44 assists on the night and was one dig away from a double-double. McKenzie Lydon led the team with 12 digs on the night. Alderson had a strong defensive night as she recorded five block assists. Providence won the first set by two pints, but Xavier battled back in set two, taking the set win with a score of 25-18. PC won the next two for the win.
