NEW YORK – On Saturday, Villanova became the firs team this season to defeat Marquette, doing so in a five-set nail biter and ending the Golden Eagles eight-match winning streak. DePaul defeated Georgetown in five sets on the road, while Seton Hall swept travel partner St. John’s at home in South Orange.
Seton Hall and St. John’s have made their way around in each BIG EAST at this time. The Pirates are 6-3 and in sole possession of third place in the conference at the half way mark. St. John’s is 3-6 and is in seventh. The Red Storm and Pirates do the Midwest-East Coast travel swing next week, visiting Creighton and Providence.
Marquette remains in first place with a 7-1 record. Villanova is in fourth place at 5-3. DePaul’s record advances to 2-6. Georgetown falls to 1-7.
There are four matches on the schedule for Sunday as other teams will meet the halfway mark. Butler plays at Providence, Xavier at Creighton, Marquette at Georgetown and DePaul at Villanova.
SETON HALL 3, ST. JOHN'S 0 (28-26,25-18,25-18)
Seton Hall junior Abby Thelen had a match-high 15 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team ended the first half of BIG EAST Conference play with a three-set sweep of St. John's, 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-18) on Saturday. Thelen finished with just three attack errors for a .444 hitting. Dominique Mason collected a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Seton Hall junior Sophia Coffey narrowly missed a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs. Seton Hall recorded a .306 attack percentage for the match, while St. John's attacked at .192. Both Seton Hall and St. John's finished with 45 team kills. For St. John’s, Julia Cast led the way with 14 kills. She reached her 1,000 kill mark during the match. She is the 10th Red Storm player to reach the 1,000-kill plateau.

VILLANOVA 3, MARQUETTE 2 (25-22,15-25,21-25,25-20,15-9)
Villanova had a trio of players - Mallory Potts , Remy Fairchild and Allie Loitz - all finish with double-digit kills as the Wildcats handed Marquette its first conference loss 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon. Villanova finished with 69 kills to Marquette’s 61. Marquette had 10 blocks to Villanova’s four. Potts finished with 21 kills. Fairchild had 16 kills, six digs. Loitz had 12 kills, 13 digs for a double-double. Playing at defensive specialist again this weekend, reigning Defensive Player of the Week Allison Fitzgerald finished with 30 digs. For Marquette, sophomore Allie Barber, reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week had a match high 25 kills. Anna Haak had 19 kills, 11 digs. Playing down a set, Marquette won sets two and three to take a one-set lead. Villanova tied it in the fourth and won the fifth set, 15-9.

DEPAUL 3, GEORGETOWN 2 (15-25,25-18,25-18,18-25,15-11)
DePaul’s Haley Bueser surpassed 1,000 career digs, helping with 20 during the match. Kelsey Horvath led the Blue Demons with 44 assists. Brittany Maxwell took 18 kills, 47 attacks, and four aces to earn DePaul the win. Six players contributed over 20 attacks. Ashley Marshall took 20, Jameson MacPhie took 21, Caitlyn Coffey took 22, Rachel Breault took 23, and Maxwell's 47 added to a team total of 152 match attacks. Coffey and MacPhie also added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. For Georgetown, Symone Speech continues to shine with 20 kills on .500 hitting. Olivia King also hit the double-digit plateau with 10. Speech also added 10 digs. Paige McKnight also had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. Georgetown won the first set before losing sets 2 and 3 to the visiting Blue Demons. GU won the fourth set 25-18. The fifth set was close, but DePaul just got the edge 15-11.
