Marquette Upsets No. 12 Creighton With 3-0 Sweep At Home

NEW YORK  –  Last night at the Al McGuire Center, the two undefeated BIG EAST teams No. 12 Creighton and Marquette squared off against each other at the home of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep. Marquette earned the upset victory with a 3-0 sweep of No. 12 Creighton, ending the Bluejays impressive 28-match BIG EAST winning streak, which ranked third-longest in league history. Creighton had not lost a league game since 2015.
 
Marquette is currently alone at the top of the BIG EAST standings at 6-0. Creighton fell to 4-1.
 
This is the first time in Marquette program history that the squad has defeated two ranked opponents in a season.  The Golden Eagles opened the 2017 campaign with a victory over then-No. 20 Hawaii.
 
BIG EAST Volleyball action continues on Friday night as eight of the 10 teams play, including the Bluejays and Golden Eagles. Marquette will host Providence, Butler hosts St. John’s, Xavier hosts Seton Hall and DePaul hosts Creighton.

MARQUETTE 3, No. 21 CREIGHTON 0 (25-16,25-15,25-21)  
Marquette extended its winning streak to seven games with a 3-0 upset of No. 12 Creighton. It was the first win over the Bluejays for Marquette since the 2013 BIG EAST Championship title match. The Golden Eagles (12-5, 6-0) were led by Allie Barber who ended the match with 21 kills and a .541 clip, while Lauren Speckman dished out 39 assists. Defensively, Marquette collected 59 digs combined with four players in double digits as junior Anna Haak collected a career-best 19, freshman Hope Werch notched 13 and Martha Konovodoff and Manon Geoffroy recorded 11 and 10 digs, respectively.  MU held Creighton to just 41 digs in the match. Creighton notched just 27 kills as a team and were held at a .093 hitting percentage with no one hitting double digit kills. Lydia Dimke led the Bluejays with 19 assists and Jaali Winters led with eight kills.  Creighton fell to 11-5 (4-1 BIG EAST)
