Butler's Martin, Villanova's Spellman Earn MBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Butler forward Kelan Martin and Villanova freshman Omari Spellman have earned the season’s first weekly basketball awards. Martin, a Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection, has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Spellman, the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Kelan Martin, Butler, F, Sr. – Martin scored 20 points in each of his first two games and averaged 11.5 rebounds in a pair of Bulldog victories. On Sunday night, the senior forward pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to go with his 20 points in an 85-75 win over Ivy League champion Princeton. Martin had 20 points and nine rebounds in an 82-64 victory over Kennesaw State.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Omari Spellman, Villanova, F, Fr.
Spellman posted a double-double in his first collegiate game with 11 points and 11 rebounds in a 75-60 victory against Columbia. Spellman recorded his double-double in just 23 minutes of playing time.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Marcus Foster, Creighton, G, Sr.
Averaged 23.0 points while making 77.3 percent from the field in victories over Yale (92-76) and Alcorn State (109-72). He shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range.
Jessie Govan, Georgetown, C, Jr.
In a 73-57 win over Jacksonville, posted 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Made 8-of-14 from the field.
Marcus LoVett, St. John’s, G, So.
Scored a game-high 23 points in a 77-61 win against New Orleans. Set career highs with five 3-pointers and four steals. Did not commit a turnover in 34 minutes.
Angel Delgado, Seton Hall, F, Sr.
Posted his 51st and 52nd career double-double in wins over Fairleigh Dickinson (90-68) and Monmouth (75-65). Averaged 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds.
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Sr.
Scored a game-high 25 points in a 101-49 victory against Morehead State. Made 9-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
