Xavier's Trevon Bluiett Has Been Named BIG EAST Player of the Week.
Xavier's Bluiett, Creighton's Alexander Take MBB Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett and Creighton guard Ty-Shon Alexander have earned the conference’s weekly men’s basketball awards. Bluiett, a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team pick, has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Alexander has been chosen BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players helped their teams to impressive road victories.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Sr. – Bluiett averaged 25.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week that included an 80-70 win at Wisconsin. In the victory over the Badgers, Bluiett scored 21 of his 25 points the second half and had 12 points in the final 2:25. Earlier in the week, Bluiett posted 26 points in a 101-75 win over Rider. For the two games, Bluiett shot 51.9 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent from 3-point range and was 15-of-15 from the foul line. He leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 25.3 average.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ty-Shon Alexander, Creighton, G, Fr.
Alexander helped Creighton to a 92-88 victory at No. 20 Northwestern by registering 14 points, three rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes of playing time. He shot 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Alexander had 11 points during a span of 3:49 as the Bluejays bolted to a 44-29 advantage in the first half.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Khyri Thomas, Creighton, G, Jr.
Had 24 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a 92-88 victory at No. 20 Northwestern. Made 9-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the foul line.
Jessie Govan, Georgetown, C, Jr.
Averaged 21.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and shot 62.5 percent from the field in a 2-0 week.
Kyron Cartwright, Providence, G, Sr.
Was named MVP of the 2K Classic after helping the Friars beat Washington (77-70) and Saint Louis (90-63). Averaged 10.3 points, 7.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week.
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, So.
Averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals in a 2-0 week. Had 22 points, seven boards and five assists in a win over Nebraska (79-56).
Desi Rodriguez, Seton Hall, F, Sr.
Averaged 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field in a 2-0 week. Had a game-high 23 points in a win over Indiana (84-68).
