BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON, DC – Seconded-seeded Georgetown won its second consecutive BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented by Jeep, topping fourth-seeded Marquette, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoyas’ Shaw Field. GU earns the Conference’s automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Championship, marking the Hoyas’ ninth trip to the NCAAs. They will learn their opponent during Monday’s selection show, slated for 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Defensive Player Brendan McDonough scored the game winner in the 11
th minute off a corner kick service from Kyle Zajec. Zajec joined McDonough on the All-Tournament Team following the match, along with Most Outstanding Offensive Player Ethan Lochner and Achara. Marquette was represented on the All-Tournament Team by Patrick Seagrist, Luka Prpa and Luis Barraza. Semifinal squads Creighton and Providence had two representatives apiece in Joel Rydstrand and Akeem Ward for the Bluejays, and Joao Serrano and Brendan Constantine for the Friars.
Trailing 1-0, Marquette put the pressure on in the second half, outshooting Georgetown 7-3, but it was Achara’s insurance score in the 70
th minute which took the wind out of the Golden Eagles’ sails. Riley Strassner was credited with the assist on Achara’s seventh goal of the year. Giannis Nikopolidis made two saves for his eighth shutout of the year, while Barazza also had two stops. Marquette finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots and 8-6 lead in corners.
Georgetown improves to 3-4 in the BIG EAST final, becoming the first team to repeat since Connecticut in 2004-05. The Hoyas are one of just five programs to claim three or more BIG EAST titles following trophies in 2015 and 2017. Marquette falls to 1-1 in BIG EAST title game appearances, winning it all in 2013. The Golden Eagles finish the season with a 7-9-3 record. The Hoyas improve to 12-4-3 in what was Head Coach Brian Wiese’s 150
th win at Georgetown.
