Marquette's Rowsey, Villanova's Spellman Take Weekly MBB Honors
NEW YORK – Marquette guard Andrew Rowsey has been chosen BIG EAST Player of the Week and Villanova forward Omari Spellman has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players helped their teams to an overtime win on the road and a home victory in their respective season finales.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Andrew Rowsey, Marquette, G, Sr. – Rowsey averaged 27.0 points in a pair of wins that improved the Golden Eagles to 9-9 in the final BIG EAST regular-season standings. He started the week with 28 points, including nine in overtime, in a 90-86 win at Georgetown. In the season finale at home against Creighton, Rowsey posted 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in an 85-81 victory. For the season, he is averaging 19.9 points and has made a league-leading 101 3-pointers. For his two seasons in BIG EAST play, he became the league’s all-time leader in free throw shooting, making 135-of-145 attempts for a .931 percentage.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Omari Spellman, Villanova, F, – In a 2-0 week to end the regular season, Spellman averaged 9.5 points and 10.0 rebounds. The 6-8 forward had six points and 14 rebounds in a 69-68 overtime win at Seton Hall and followed that with 13 points and six boards in a 97-73 win over Georgetown. For the season, Spellman is averaging 10.9 points and 7.8 rebounds. His rebound mark ranks fourth in the BIG EAST.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Khyri Thomas, Creighton, G, Jr.
In a 1-1 week, averaged 20.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals. Shot 63.6 percent from the field. Had 24 points and nine rebounds in a loss at Marquette (85-81).
Justin Simon, St. John’s, G, So.
Averaged 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 4.0 steals in a 1-1 week. Has his 10th double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a double OT win against Butler (75-68).
Khadeen Carrington, Seton Hall, G, Sr.
Averaged 24.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a 1-1 week. He made 16-of-18 free throws. Had 25 points in a 77-70 win over Butler in the season finale.
Mikal Bridges, Villanova, F, Jr.
Averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Had 27 points and seven boards in a 93-62 victory over DePaul.
Trevon Bluiett, Xavier, G, Sr.
Averaged 22.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week while helping the team capture the outright BIG EAST regular-season title. Made his school record 300th 3-pointer.
