Creighton and Villanova Claim #BIGEASTsb Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Villanova freshman pitcher Anissa Amarillas garners BIG EAST Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row, while Creighton’s Sam Crowley earns Player of the Week recognition.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Sam Crowley, Creighton, Sr., OF
Crowley closed out the week 7-for-10 with four runs scored and five RBI during Creighton’s three-game sweep of Seton Hall. The senior doubled home the second run during Creighton’s weekend-opening 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Her sacrifice fly drove in the 12th and final run during the Bluejays’ five-inning 12-4 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Crowley also drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run during Sunday’s 5-3 comeback win. Earlier in the week, the senior drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-RBI triple during the sixth inning of Creighton’s 4-3 win against UMKC. In addition to her eight hits during the five-game week, Crowley also had two sacrifice bunts and one sac fly.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Anissa Amarillas, Villanova, Fr.
Amarillas had a dominate week garnering all three wins in a series sweep over Georgetown. The freshman posted a 0.40 ERA over the trio of BIG EAST games and struck out nine batters. In Sunday’s contest against the Hoyas, she went all seven innings allowing no runs on just six hits to go along with three strikeouts. In the series opener, she pitched a complete game allowing just three hits and one run, while going the opening six innings without letting a single runner on base. Overall, in four games played, Amarillas pitched 23.2 innings with a 0.59 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
Weekly Honor Roll
Kaitlin Doud, Butler, Jr., P
Doud went 2-1 in the circle this weekend, recording wins against UIC and Providence. In the series opener against the Friars, the junior came on in relief, giving up only two hits and striking out six as the Bulldogs picked up a 2-0 win. In the second game of the doubleheader, Doud made a major difference offensively, registering a walk-off three-run homer to seal the 5-4 victory.
Kiele Miller, Creighton, Fr., P
Miller tallied 31 strikeouts in 19.0 innings pitched during four appearances, while going 3-0, including a pair of complete game victories against Seton Hall to help the Bluejays sweep the Pirates and move into first place in the BIG EAST standings. Miller became only the fourth freshman in Creighton softball history to record at least 100 strikeouts with her second of 10 strikeouts during Creighton’s 2-1 victory in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Missy Zoch, DePaul, So., P
With an overall ERA of 0.0 in 12.1 innings of work, Zoch went the distance in the series finale against St. John’s, allowing zero earned runs and striking out nine batters in 10 innings. She also picked up a save in DePaul’s 3-1 win against intra-city rival UIC on Friday.
Kaitlin Mattera, St. John’s, So., 1B/C
In the top of the 11th with a runner on base and the game tied at two, Mattera recorded a two-run homer to lift the Johnnies past the Blue Demons, 4-2, in the series opener. For the week, the sophomore batted .500, with eight hits, five RBI, two doubles, two runs and a home run.
Natalie Segovia, Villanova, Sr., INF
Batting .444, with four hits, 7 RBI, a triple, a double and a run scored, Segovia led the Wildcats to their seventh-straight conference victory after sweeping Georgetown this weekend. In the series opener, she tallied the game-winning double, sending three runners home as the Wildcats claimed a 5-1 victory.
