Standings logjam splinters as No. 11 Georgetown claims solo top spot.

NEW YORK – Round 3 of BIG EAST women’s soccer play saw No. 11 Georgetown knock off Providence to clinch solo possession of first place in the standings. The Friars moved into a three-way tie for second with Sunday winners Xavier and DePaul, while Creighton, Butler and Villanova, which all claimed draws on Sunday, follow in a three-way knot for fifth. Week 4 of BIG EAST play is set for Thursday, with the Hoyas and Musketeers kicking off the five-match day at 3 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C.
 
#11 Georgetown 4, Providence 0 
The first-place battle saw the 11th-ranked Hoyas emerge in impressive fashion, claiming their seventh consecutive win and fifth straight in shutout fashion. Amanda Carolan scored Georgetown’s first two goals, just four minutes apart, beginning in the 28th minute with what proved to be the game winner. Jenna Menta and Paula Germino-Watnick added insurance scores, while Boo Jackson was credited with a trio of assists. GU outshot Providence 21-6 as Friar goalkeeper Shelby Hogan made 10 saves. Anna Leat made two stops to claim the clean sheet. Carolan's pair of goals put her at No. 4 on the Georgetown all-time list with 32 career goals. GU is unbeaten in its last 15 BIG EAST contests.

Xavier 5, Seton Hall 0 
The Musketeers improved to 2-1 in BIG EAST play with its largest-margin victory since 2007. Samantha Dewey scored twice while Carrie Lewis was credited with a pair of assists. Xavier scored three goals in the first half, outshooting The Hall 15-2 over the opening 45 minutes. Toni Bizzarro made two saves to earn the shutout, the seventh of the season for the Musketeers, tying Georgetown for the BIG EAST lead. Brooke Sroka scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in just the third minute, her second goal of the season. Dewey’s two-goal afternoon brought her season points total to 25, most in the BIG EAST.

Creighton 1, Marquette 1 (2OT)
Creighton’s Ansley Atkinson and Marquette’s Katrina Wetherell each notched their first goals of the season as the Bluejays and Golden Eagles played to a 1-1 draw in Milwaukee. CU struck first in the ninth minute as the Bluejays outshot MU 9-4 over the opening half. Marquette turned it around in the second, with Wetherell striking in the 51st and the Golden Eagles outshot Creighton 9-6 in the second period. Maddy Henry made seven saves for Marquette while Katie Sullivan had two stops for Creighton.

DePaul 2, St. John's 0  
The Blue Demons scored a goal in each half, with Morgan Turner’s 35th-minute score proving to be the game winner as DePaul capped off a 2-0 week in BIG EAST play. Mollie Eriksson made five saves to earn the shutout, her fifth of the year. The Blue Demons outshot St. John’s 15-6 as Meredith Reinhardt made eight saves for the Red Storm. Zsani Kajan led the Red Storm with five shots, matching DePaul’s Bina Saipi for the game high. Saipi notched the insurance goal in the 64th minute, her first score of the year.

Villanova 1, Butler 1 (2OT)
Makayla Stadler’s first goal of the season gave Villanova a 1-0 first-half lead which it held onto until the 86th minute when Anja Savich scored the equalizer for Butler. Savich’s goal was her seventh of the year, fourth most in the BIG EAST. Rebecca Gartner finished with six saves for the Wildcats while Stephanie Rodriguez had three stops for the Bulldogs.
