Seton Hall, Creighton remain unbeaten with Tuesday night victories

Seton Hall 53, VCU 33
Seton Hall held VCU without a three-pointer and only 27.5-percent shooting the Pirates improved to 3-0 with a 53-33 victory over the Rams at Walsh Gymnasium on Tuesday. The Hall’s stifling defense held VCU, the Atlantic 10 preseason favorites, to just 33 points, the fewest by a Seton Hall opponent since they routed Stony Brook, 65-30, on Dec. 17, 2011. Offensively, Alexis Lewis led all scorers with 13 points while Shadeen Samuels had nine points to go with 11 rebounds.  Selena Philoxy had a strong performance, pulling down 11 rebounds in only 18 minutes off the bench.

Creighton 61, RV/RV South Dakota State 48
A strong second half and 23 points from Jaylyn Agnew lifted Creighton to a 61-48 victory over South Dakota State on Tuesday in D.J. Sokol Arena. Agnew led all scorers with 23 points, while Temi Carda added 13 points and nine rebounds. Creighton (2-0) closed the night shooting 35 percent from the field, including going 10-31 from behind the arc. The Bluejays out-rebounded the Jackrabbits 39-34 as Creighton grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. The Bluejays dished out 17 assists.

Richmond 51, Georgetown 49
Georgetown battled until the end with Richmond in an exciting home opener in McDonough Arena. With 30 seconds left on the clock and Richmond up by two, Tatiana Thompson pulled the Hoyas (0-2) even with a basket underneath before Richmond was fouled with six seconds left and made a pair of free throws. Nikola Kovacikova’s final heave came up just short as the final buzzer sounded and GU fell 51-49. Kovacikova had a team-high 15 points along with five boards. Thompson recorded 13 points and Brianna Jones rounded out the top-three scorers with seven and a team-high of nine rebounds.
