Dramatic conference openers highlighted by rivalry games and come-from-behind wins.

Seton Hall 67, Butler 62
The Pirates used a 24-point fourth quarter highlighted by a go-ahead three-pointer by Barbara Johnson with 29 seconds left to win their BIG EAST opener at Butler (8-4, 0-1 BIG EAST). Johnson finished with a game-high 18 points while Kristen Spolyar led the Bulldogs with 17 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Butler led for more than 36 minutes of the contest, shooting nearly 48 percent on the afternoon, as Seton Hall (8-4, 1-0) took its first lead of the game with just 1:12 left in regulation thanks to a pair of Johnson free-throws. Alexis Lewis also stood out for the Pirates with 17 points, six steals and five rebounds.

-/RV Creighton 65, Georgetown 56
The Bluejays erased a 14-point deficit thanks to 20 second-half points from Jaylyn Agnew to pick up a road win in their BIG EAST opener. Agnew finished with a game-high 23 points, draining four threes while dishing five assists and grabbing four rebounds. Leading 12-9 after the first quarter, Georgetown exploded for a 21-point second period, going on a 13-0 run between the quarters to lead by 14 with 3:51 left in the first half. Creighton (9-3, 1-0) took the lead midway through the third quarter and never looked back, holding the host Hoyas to just seven points in the frame. GU’s bench outscored Creighton’s, 22-4. Taylor Barnes led Georgetown (3-9, 0-1) with 16 points thanks to a 9-of-11 clip from the charity stripe, while Brianna Jones grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Temi Carda added 16 points and eight rebounds for Creighton.

St. John’s 75, Xavier 67
The Red Storm won for the fourth time in the last five outings, scoring a near wire-to-wire victory in their BIG EAST opener. St. John’s (8-4, 1-0) used a 20-12 opening quarter to gain the final advantage as the final three frames were even at 55 apiece. Qadashah Hoppie scored seven of her team-high 18 points in the opening 10 minutes. Xavier’s A’riana Gray scored a game-high 20 points while teammate Sarah Leyendecker had a career day with 18 points and 13 rebounds. St. John’s freshman standout Leilani Correa added 17 points and six rebounds. Both teams came out of halftime firing, scoring a combined 49 points. St. John’s shot 50 percent on the afternoon while the Musketeers (1-11, 0-1) finished with a .414 clip.

Villanova 51, Providence 49
The Friars outscored the Wildcats 20-10 over the final 10 minutes to shrink a once-16-point margin down to two with 42 seconds remaining, but Providence (9-4, 0-1) couldn’t complete the comeback to fall in Sunday’s BIG EAST opener. Standout Villanova duo Mary Gedaka and Maddy Siegrist scored 18 points apiece, while Gedaka grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Three-pointers were the difference as Villanova (6-5, 1-0) drained eight from long range, including three by Siegrist, while the normally hot-shooting Friars were limited to a 3-of-12 clip with Kaela Webb draining all three. Webb finished with a team-high 13 points.

16/16 DePaul 89, -/RV Marquette 71
The 16th-ranked Blue Demons converted 26 Marquette turnovers into 30 points to win the BIG EAST opener between the longtime rivals. Trailing 12-9 after the first quarter, DePaul (11-2, 1-0) erupted for 32 points in the second frame before eclipsing the 20-point mark in the final two periods to pull away. Lexi Held scored a game-high 22 points off 9-of-16 shooting, including 3-of-6 from deep, while Chante Stonewall added 20 points and five steals. Lauren Van Kleunen scored 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles (9-3, 0-1), sinking 7-of-11 shots from the field while adding five rebounds. Selena Lott made 8-of-10 from the field en route to 18 points while dishing a game-high six assists.
