AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the Division I Academic All-America teams on Thursday which included two BIG EAST student-athletes. Georgetown senior forward Paula Germino-Watnick was named to the second team while Butler senior defender Annika Schmidt was a third-team honoree.
Germino-Watnick is a biology of global health major and holds a 3.82 GPA. She was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Earlier this week, Germino-Watnick was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Team. She ranked second on the team with 26 points off of nine goals and eight assists. Germino-Watnick is the first Hoya in program history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. The Hoyas finished the 2019 season 13-5-3 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the eighth-straight year.
Schmidt led a Bulldogs defense that posted nine shutouts, the second most in the BIG EAST regular season, and a .80 GAA on the year. She also added two goals in her senior campaign. A standout in the classroom as well, Schmidt owns a 3.98 cumulative GPA as a sports media major. She is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic and Butler Honor Roll awardee. The Zionsville, Ind. native has anchored the Bulldogs backline over the last three seasons. She helped lead Butler to back-to-back BIG EAST Championship appearances in 2017 and 2018, and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2017. The redshirt senior is a three-time All-BIG EAST first team member and United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection.
