Marquette's Howard, Georgetown's McClung Earn #BIGEASTmbb Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – For the second week in a row, Marquette guard Markus Howard has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Georgetown guard Mac McClung has earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr. – Howard scored a game-high 38 points to lead Marquette to a 66-65 win over first-place Villanova and averaged 27.5 points in a 1-1 week for the Golden Eagles. In the Villanova victory, Howard shot 13-of-24 from the field, 5-of-11 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the foul line. The 38 points marked his fourth 30-point game in league play this season. He leads the BIG EAST with a 25.2 scoring mark. Howard has won Player of the Week honors six times this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Mac McClung, Georgetown, G, Fr. – McClung takes Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this year after averaging 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a 1-1 week. He had 13 points, six boards and five assists in a 76-67 win at Providence and scored a game-high 21 points in a 73-69 loss to Butler. For the season, McClung leads all league freshmen in scoring with a 13.6 average.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kamar Baldwin, Butler, G, Jr.
Scored a team-high 18 points, including four free throws in the final 36 seconds, to help win at Georgetown (73-69).
Alpha Diallo, Providence, G, Jr.
Averaged 16.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 10 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in a win at St. John’s (70-56). Scored 22 points in a loss to Georgetown (76-67).
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr.
Had 28 points in a win at Marquette (70-69) and 20 points in a loss to Providence (70-56). Averaged 6.5 rebounds in the two games.
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr.
Scored 13 of his team’s final 15 points in a comeback win over Creighton (63-58). Finished with 22 points, including 10-of-10 from the foul line, seven rebounds and four steals.
Saddiq Bey, Villanova, F, Fr.
Averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Scored a season-high 17 points in an overtime win against Creighton (66-59).
