Marquette's Howard, Georgetown's Akinjo Take #BIGEASTmbb Honors
NEW YORK – Marquette guard Markus Howard has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Georgetown guard James Akinjo has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Howard led Marquette to a road win at Butler while Akinjo led the Hoyas in scoring in a 1-1 week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr. – Howard poured in 32 points in Marquette’s only game of the week, a 76-58 win at Butler. The junior shot 14-of-23 (.609) from the floor and grabbed five rebounds. He leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 25.0 average, free throw shooting at 91.1 percent and 3-point baskets with 78. The 32-point effort was Howard’s 13th 30-point game of his career. The junior takes Player of the Week honors for the fifth time this season.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
James Akinjo, Georgetown, G, Fr. – Akinjo earns Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season after averaging 21.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steaks in a 1-1 week. He scored all 23 of his points in an 80-73 victory over Xavier. Had a team-high 19 points in a 77-65 loss at Villanova. For the season, Akinjo leads all league freshmen in scoring with a 14.1 scoring average. He ranks second among all players in assists with a 5.2 mark.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Martin Krampelj, Creighton, F, Jr.
In a 1-1 week, averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Had 23 points and six boards in a win against Xavier (76-54).
Paul Reed, DePaul, F, So.
Had 18 points and 15 rebounds in a win against Providence (67-55) and averaged 12.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week.
Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr.
Averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals in a 1-1 week. Had 26 points, eight boards, eight assists and six steals in a win at Creighton (83-67).
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr.
Tallied 31 points in a victory over Providence (65-63) and averaged 26.0 points. Averaged 26.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week.
Collin Gillespie, Villanova, G, So.
Scored a career-high 30 points in a win against Georgetown (77-65) and averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Shot 10-of-19 from 3-point range.
