No. 2 Georgetown Advances, Wittenberg Sets Stadium Assist Record
DENVER, Colo. – The No. 2 seed Georgetown Hoyas advance to their third BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship final with a 13-12 win over the No. 3 seed Providence Friars, Thursday evening at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver, Colo. Georgetown midfielder Lucas Wittenberg paced the way in points as he recorded a game high nine on a stadium record eight assists and a goal.
Georgetown junior attacker Jake Carraway netted a hat trick for the Hoyas (12-4). Declan McDermott scored the game-winning goal with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter, capping a 4-0 Hoya run to secure the victory.
The Hoyas took a quick 2-0 four minutes into the start of the semifinal matchup. But Providence (7-9) rallied back with five straight goals to take the lead. Carraway ended the Hoyas’ scoring draught with a goal with just over a minute to play.
The Friars would hold on to the lead through the half, going into the locker room up 9-6.
Coming in off the break, Georgetown, ranked 17th nationally, went on a 3-0 run to even the score, but Providence answered with a trio of their own to go into the final quarter up 12-9.
The final period was all Hoyas as Dylan Watson, Carraway, Massimo Buccin and McDermott each scored. Witterberg assisted three of the four goals. His assist on Bucci’s game-tying goal broke the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium assist record.
Georgetown switched goalies at the half, starting the game with Owen McElroy and finishing with Chris Brandau who earned the win.
Providence was led by Matt Grill with three goals and an assist. Friar keeper Tate Boyce made 10 saves. He finished his career with 725 career saves, the most among active Division I goaltenders. Providence won 15-of-28 faceoffs.
Earlier this season, Georgetown defeated the Friars in a similar way, coming back from a 9-5 halftime deficit to win, 17-15.
Georgetown will play the winner of the Denver/Villanova semifinal. The BIG EAST Championship will take place on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. MT on CBSSN.
