NEW YORK – For the seventh time in 15 seasons as a member of the BIG EAST Conference, a DePaul student-athlete has captured women’s basketball’s top academic honor. Senior forward Chante Stonewall was named the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Presented by Sunkist, on Tuesday. The selection was made by the Conference’s Academic Affairs Committee.
A senior from Normal, Ill., Stonewall will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. She is the fourth DePaul player since conference realignment (2013-14) to be recognized following Brittany Hrynko (2014-15), Megan Podkowa (2015-16) and Brooke Schulte (2016-17). Additional Blue Demon honorees include Jenna Rubino (’06-07), Allie Quigley (’07-08) and Anna Martin (2012-13).
A double major in Psychology and Sociology, Stonewall carries a 3.684 grade point average while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree. She is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree and is on pace for her fourth certificate this season. Stonewall is an eight-time Dean’s List choice and has been named to the Athletics Director Honor Roll in all 11 quarters at DePaul. Stonewall has been a member of the WBCA Top 25 Team in three consecutive years.
On the court, Stonewall enters the postseason with a team-leading 12 20-point games, averaging a DePaul-high 17.3 points per game to rank fifth in the BIG EAST. Over 18 league games, Stonewall led the Blue Demons with 16.8 points, sparking the nationally ranked squad to its sixth BIG EAST regular-season crown in the last seven years.
Stonewall is an active participant in the community as well, both on DePaul’s campus and in the city of Chicago. She is a member of the DePaul University Athletics Captain’s Council, which meets to discuss university and athletics business, policies and events. She frequently participates in events such as the Sheffield Garden Walk, St. Vincent DePaul Student Service Days, basketball clinics for children and annual toy and blanket drives.
The BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2019-20 academic year. In addition, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 10 member institutions) will receive postgraduate scholarships as the winners of their respective institutions’ Scholar-Athlete Award. The winners of the institutional awards are then eligible for the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
